Economy and Climate Change

NEW -> Contingent Buyer Assistance Program
Remember when the Maldives were at the Vanguard of global warming victimization…they were to be inundated within a few years and needed billions to move their population to dry land…well…turns out the Islands are getting….bigger (according to the New York Times)…Idiots!!...🤦🏽‍♂️😂😂😂😂👎🏽🦄🌈

The Vanishing Islands That Failed to Vanish

Low-lying tropical island nations were expected to be early victims of rising seas. But research tells a surprising story: Many islands are stable. Some have even grown.

And indeed, when the world began paying attention to global warming decades ago, these islands, which form atop coral reefs in clusters called atolls, were quickly identified as some of the first places climate change might ravage in their entirety. As the ice caps melted and the seas crept higher, these accidents of geologic history were bound to be corrected and the tiny islands returned to watery oblivion, probably in this century.

Then, not very long ago, researchers began sifting through aerial images and found something startling. They looked at a couple dozen islands first, then several hundred, and by now close to 1,000. They found that over the past few decades, the islands’ edges had wobbled this way and that, eroding here, building there. By and large, though, their area hadn’t shrunk. In some cases, it was the opposite: They grew. The seas rose, and the islands expanded with them.

SunPower stock collapses below $1 as company halts leases, installations and shipments

· SunPower’s stock has fallen 70% this week and nearly 93% the last 12 months.

· The collapse this week came after SunPower told dealers that it was halting new leases, installations and shipments.

· Guggenheim analysts said the announcement likely marks the end of SunPower as an operating business.

The residential solar sector has been under significant pressure as high interest rates have depressed demand and left companies with too much product on hand. While the sector was hoping for relief this year, stubborn inflation has resulted in the Federal Reserve holding interest rates higher for longer than the market originally expected.

Residential solar has faced the added headwind of growing political uncertainty in the U.S. with the presidential election around the corner. The industry has benefited from tax credits under the Inflation Reduction Act under the Biden administration.

With the Trump campaign gaining momentum, however, there is growing concern among investors that Republicans could sweep the White House and Congress, putting them in a position to potentially dismantle the IRA.

California's plastic bag ban accidentally created another waste problem.

California banned single-use plastic grocery bags in 2016, becoming the first state to take this major environmental step. In the eight years it has been in effect, billions of flimsy plastic bags were removed from the waste stream, and several other states were inspired to adopt similar bans.

But it's not quite the environmental win it may seem. While the ban eliminated one ubiquitous source of plastic waste, it inadvertently opened the door for an even more pernicious one — those thicker convenience totes for sale at the checkout that were designed to be reused and recycled. News flash: They aren't being reused in any meaningful way, and they can't be recycled. Indeed, the total amount of trash from plastic bags that California sends to landfills has never been higher.

So the 10cent plastic bag @grocery stores are 4X heavier than the original free one.
Although plastic bag usage has been reduced, it was not reduced 4X so there is now more plastic waste.

Solution: Charge 10cents for the old lighter bag and ban the heavier one.

I agree with this.

But personally, it has reduced my reusable bag usage and I only get those 10c bags if I forgot my reusable bags at home. Even if I leave them in the car, I'll just ask them to put the stuff in my cart and then I'll bag them at the car.

Again…more pointless feel good self inflicted suffering that causes high prices and inflation but accomplishes…nothing…Great Green New Deal…for Asia…🤦🏽‍♂️😡😡👎🏽🦄🌈

Asia Pacific's Record Coal Use Makes Western Sacrifice Pointless

The West's grand crusade for a carbon-neutral future is turning into a colossal case of useless sacrifice. While Olympic athletes were asked to forego air conditioning in Paris to save the planet, and American factories face crippling electricity costs, a stark reality continues to unfold in Asia.

China and India, the world's largest and second largest energy consumers, respectively, are on a coal-fired rampage, building new power plants and opening new mines at a feverish rate. A report by the Energy Institute reveals that global coal consumption has hit a record high, thanks to Asia Pacific demand.

Asia Pacific’s Surge in Coal Consumption

Developed nations pat themselves on the back for shutting down coal plants, even as Asia's insatiable appetite for this energy source cancels out climate-driven actions in the West. Every new coal mine in India or every additional megawatt of coal-generated power in China negates whatever emission reductions are achieved by the West. Justifications for Asia's coal dependency are rooted in the economic realities of the region’s rapid industrialization, which requires the reliability and affordability of fossil fuels. Criticism of reliance on coal, oil and natural gas is based on pseudo-scientific predictions of Earth being overheated by emissions of carbon dioxide -- a plant food that is benefiting ecosystems.

In most cases, coal best meets Asia’s need for dependable baseload electricity. Coal is abundant, both domestically and globally. In contrast, renewable energy sources like solar and wind are simply not stable or cheap enough to meet the massive energy demands of these burgeoning economies.

West Digs Its Own Energy Graveyard

Western elites often overlook the social implications of their “green” push. As traditional coal and gas plants are decommissioned, renewable energy sources increasingly undermine grid reliability, make blackouts more likely and drive up electricity prices. Low-income families in the West suffer most with the pressure of choosing between heating homes and putting food on the table. High energy costs have become a significant burden for businesses across Europe and the U.S., threatening their viability. The Federation of Small Businesses in the U.K. reports its members experienced an average increase of more than 400% between 2021-23. Environmental crusaders conveniently ignore such harsh realities, and warnings about the consequences of “green” policies seemingly fall on deaf ears.

“Creating hundreds of thousands of jobs in clean energy for American workers, including the IBEW installing 500,000—500,000—charging stations all across America.”

VERDICT: MOSTLY FALSE. They built eight, as of May.

President Joe Biden claimed credit Monday night for building 500,000 electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, as part of the bipartisan infrastructure bill. The reality is that as of May 2024, two and-a-half years after the bill was passed, only eight of the charging stations had been built.

And the narrative continues to collapse…along with our public investments in the Green New Steal…so predictable…🤦🏽‍♂️😡😡🐬👎🏽🦄🌈

SolarEdge Has a Big Earnings Miss. The Stock Sinks More.

NOAA warns 2024 Atlantic hurricane season could be 'extraordinary' with 25 named storms

'The forecast ... is the highest NOAA has ever issued for the May outlook,' NOAA Administrator Rick Spinrad said during the news conference.

'This season is looking to be an extraordinary one in a number of ways.'

The updated 2024 outlook has a 70 percent probability, which includes 17 to 25 names storms, eight to 13 hurricanes and four to seven major hurricanes.

The previous record was in 2010 when NOAA's outlook showed 14 to 23 named storms that led to 12 hurricanes.

The tropics are broken:' So where are all the Atlantic hurricanes?

So far this year, including the three that are spinning Monday, there have been more storms in the Pacific than the Atlantic, and that's a bit of a surprise, forecasters say.

This hurricane season is confounding experts and defying forecasts. What the heck is going on?

It’s early September – what should be the busiest stretch of hurricane season. Forecasters predicted this one was going to be bad: storm after storm, the most bullish forecasts on record.

Instead, the Atlantic Ocean is enveloped in a rare and strange calm that has flummoxed forecasters and reset their expectations. And the whole thing could be a glimpse at what’s to come as the planet gets hotter.

Despite ideal conditions that fueled pre-season predictions of upwards of 20 named storms, the immediate prospects for one are low, and none have formed in the Atlantic since Ernesto in mid-August – a streak unmatched in 56 years.

“If you had told me a month ago that nothing would (develop) after Ernesto I wouldn’t have believed you,” said Phil Klotzbach, a hurricane expert and research scientist at Colorado State University. “It’s really surprising.”
