Looking for one bedroom condo in Huntington Beach for family getaways- prices roughly 1 mill and hoa 5-700. I know u could get a lot more further away- 2 bedroom too much money for us. Is this a bad idea??? This would be across street from sand

a friend of our's just listed her brand new condo in HB, 2 miles from PCH for sale. Its 4 bedrooms/3 baths, with sunset/sunrise views, $1.55 mil and HOA is $360.

Sounds great but we wanna be across the street or one block away ideally near pacific city mall for walk ability

For less than $1k you can rent a place for the weekend near the beach. Instead of being fixed to HB, take your family to different beaches cities during the Summer. Go explore California beach towns/cities like Oxnard, Santa Barbara, etc. Go see a Polo tournament in Carpinteria. Wine tasting in Lompoc. Put your $1 million in an index fund, relax, and enjoy life.

The conversational shift from buying a nearly ocean front 1 Br condo for family getaway's towards buying a SFR in Chino indicated this is a question more about an AirBnB investment than anything else. Yes, you would probably make more money with a vacation rental, but you have 100x the number tenants to deal with. At least 1 out of those 100 will end up being a genuine problem - legal issues, property damage, etc.

Since a SFD in Chino is, and to quote, "minutes from OC"..... ;) , the easier play is to get a long term high quality renter in a Chino SFD - IMHO.

If you are asking will this be good investment? My answer is no. Condos in that zip code have gone nowhere since March 2022 when the Fed started rapidly increasing interest rates. Adjusted for inflation, home prices have been a big loser.

If you are asking will this be a fun thing for my family? I would say yes. You've got lots of access to outdoor activities, plus restaurants & night life a short bike ride away. Big events like the US Open of Surfing and the Air Show draw big crowds, and if you have a place across from the sand it's convenient to enjoy all these events.
