Hurricane Ike, Texas is going to get it

Ike is now predicted to turn north a little sooner that it was yesterday. It is looking to make landfall just south of Houston. It is a huge storm.

So far tonight all schools and classes are cancelled for the rest of the week in Greater Houston and surrounding areas, parts of Galveston county just south of Houston is under mandatory evacuation, but no plans right now to try to evacuate Houston proper. I don't see much happening around SE Tx for the rest of the week.

Texas doesn't have any building codes. They kind of follow the southern building code, but pretty much, you can put up what you want. They literally let you do what you want.

All those highrises? Single paine non tempered glass. This one will be fun.

Last time we got a winner like this, my wife got stuck on a FEMA deployment doing 120 days in Mississippi post Katrina.

My brother lives in Clear Lakes shores... his house is going to get pounded. He evacuated with this wife/child/cat early this morning to avoid the rush. We will see.

good luck

Hopefully everything works out OK for your brother and his family.

I've been through a few hurricanes and blizzards - they aren't fun.

The scariest thing is watching the nearby trees in the wind.

We had a few trees fall on our house and cars during a few hurricanes.

Luckily nothing major happened that couldn't easily be fixed

It's just a pain to deal with insurance companies.

Bix, keep us updated.

Our home is in Clear Lake, two miles from JSC. My wife is in the air on her way home from SNA. Our zip is on the mandatory evacuation list, but the house is at one of the highest elevations in Clear Lake. Once she gets home in a couple of hours we will evaluate things. The highways out of town are fairly snarled. Gas is an issue.

Otherwise, it is a hot, humid, sunshiny day in SE Houston right now.

Consider...

Good luck, and let us know what happens. They say it is going to go to a Catagory 3 when it nears land as well as 8-12 ft of storm surge.... Good luck

Thanks bix, we are at 24 ft and not in the 100-yr flood plain. I am more concerned with the wind and the six, 50ft pine trees on my property. The house is build to hurricane standards, so other than shingles and the single pane glass not too worried about the structure.

Thanks skek. My wife just landed. Officials are closing both Houston airports tomorrow morning.

Just got this CNN Breaking News alert:

-- People sheltering at ground level at Galveston Bay when Hurricane Ike hits

face "certain death," the weather service warns.

CA, are you anywhere near Galveston Bay?

We are here, roughly 20 miles north of the Gulf and 5 miles from the bay. We walked through our neighborhood this evening and it looks like about 50% have evacuated. Watching the news, they seem to all be clogged-up north of town on I-45. We are going to decide tomorrow which way we head. Good news is Ike has not strengthened today and it is traveling fast enough it shouldn't be a rain-flooding issue.

I was going to drive to Huntington Beach next week to start a new job, but Ike has delayed the work I was having done to the house (and maybe added to it), and will likely delay me a week.

Good luck Consider... Looks like the winds at Ike's core have increased to 110mph recently. This ain't gonna be pretty.

Before and after pics. It was a long night and morning. The worst thing we lost is a couple of rows of shingles. Winds in this area were 115mph. The hurricane eye passed direct over us. We had about 2 hrs of strange calm between when the eye front passed over and the back end hit us. The back side of the eye was much worse. At no time did we have a southerly wind which is weird being that's the direction it came from. NE wind on the front, NW then W wind on the back side. We are in the "lucky 15%" that still have power tonight. Tx seems to have a good handle on bringing everyone back online.

..sorry bix..

Edited to remove bad humor and add that I'm thankful that your family is safe.

Things (hopefully insured things) are replaceable.

Everything except the bottom floor (*sorry bad humor there*).

The downside is all the cars he had there are wiped out. So his 2005 Mini, 1986 Merkur XR and 1972 Ford Galaxy (all modified - heavily). My brother is at least in good spirits and has a rebuild and can do attitude.

Anyways good luck

-Jason
