warranty for appliances

Is there some kind of insurance one can buy for appliances etc
once the 1 year period is over. If so can people point to the
right places and suggest what the cost should be for the same.

Yes, a home warranty from a third party provider like American Home Shield.  However, you can't just buy a-la-carte coverage for the appliances...you'll have to buy the coverage for the entire home to get the coverage for the appliances.
 
there is many options.
1.Buy from where you bought ur appliance from (Best buy, Lowes. etc)
2. Home warranty plan add on (american home shield etc)
3. Square Trade (online warranty program there is often coupons to make it cheaper)
 
I can vouch for American Home Shield.

You may never need it, but the times when I have (at least 6 times), they save me tons of money.
